To answer your 5 questions, we will consider scriptures which teach there are only TWO CLASSES of people in the world, the SAVED and the UNSAVED. We shall see that the destiny of their souls is not determined by WHAT THEY DID, but by WHAT THEY BELIEVED concerning Christ.

THE SAVED are those who have “believed on the Lord Jesus Christ” as their Lord and Savior (see Acts 16:31). Jesus said in Luke 19:10, “…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to SAVE that which was lost.” He said in John 10:9, “I am THE DOOR. If anyone enters by Me, he will be SAVED.” The “saved” are those who realized they were lost sinners who needed to be saved and who then realized that Jesus Christ was the One who could save them. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am THE WAY, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The saved have believed that Jesus is indeed THE DOOR of salvation and THE WAY to heaven. They know that He made the way to heaven by taking their place in death and judgment on the cross and by His glorious resurrection three days later (see John 3:14-16; Matthew 27:33-50; John 19:28-30; Matthew 28:1-6 and 1st Corinthians 15:1-4). The moment they believed on Him as their Lord and Savior they became a “new creation in Christ” as we see in 2nd Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is IN CHRIST, he is a new creation; old things have passes away; behold, all things are become new.” This is the believer’s POSITION before God and it is based solely on their FAITH IN CHRIST. They will give evidence of their faith in Christ by doing good works (see Ephesians 2:8-10 and James 2:14-25). Their “devotion to Christ” after they are saved has nothing to do with where their souls go when they die, nor does it have anything to do with their resurrection. When THE SAVED die, their spirit is “absent from the body and present with the Lord” (2nd Corinthians 5:8). Their resurrection will take place when Christ comes to take ALL BELIEVERS HOME TO GLORY (John 14:2-3). It is vital to see that their resurrection is based on their being “in Christ” and not on “how devoted they were to Christ.” In the great “resurrection chapter” (1st Corinthians chapter 15) we read, “For as IN ADAM all die, even so IN CHRIST all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterwards THOSE WHO ARE CHRIST’S at His coming” (verses 22-23). You are right in saying “the dead shall rise first” but living believers, who are also IN CHRIST, will be “caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air” (1st Thessalonians 4:16-17).

THE UNSAVED are those who refused to “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Jesus said in John 8:24, “If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” They die UNFORGIVEN and their soul and spirit leaves their body and goes to a place of torment (see James 2:26 with Luke 16:19, 22-24). Their soul and spirit will remain there until the end of time and then the “resurrection of THE UNSAVED” will take place. This is called “the resurrection of judgment” in John 5:29. We see the details of this resurrection in Revelation 20:11-15 (which I encourage you to read). In short, their bodies are resurrected and are reunited with their spirits, and they will stand before the Great White Throne where Jesus Christ will judge them (verses 11-14). Verse 15 is especially solemn: “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” The fact is no one there will be found in the Book of Life because all had refused to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, the One who would have given them “eternal life” had they believed (see John 3:16; 5:24; 6:24-40 and 20:30-31). It is important to see that they will be cast into the lake of fire (Hell) based on their UNBELIEF, and not on their wicked works (for all their sins could have been forgiven had they believed). Yet their wicked works will determine their “degree of punishment” in the lake of fire (compare Revelation 20:12 with Luke 12:47-48 and Matthew 11:20-24).  (DO)  (606.5)
