YES and NO.  The very introduction of sin into the world brought with it sickness and death.  We read in Genesis 2:15-17, “And Jehovah God taketh the man, and causeth him to rest in the garden of Eden, to serve it, and to keep it. And Jehovah God layeth a charge on the man, saying, `Of every tree of the garden eating thou dost eat; and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it — dying thou dost die.” (YLT).  The Lord warned man that by eating of the tree of the knowledge of sin and death, the death process would begin. Sickness is part of that process. Unfortunately, they did break God’s command and ate of the forbidden fruit. Death and dying has been the experience of humanity ever since.  Upon eating the forbidden fruit, the guilty pair immediately died spiritually, and the physical death process also began.

From that very day, sin entered into the world and we, as a consequence, get sick and we die.  Romans 3:23 tells us, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”  Since we ALL sin, we ALL will get sick and will die, unless the Lord returns before we die.

Is every sickness a punishment for a particular sin?  No, not necessarily.  Let’s read James 5:14-15, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and IF he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”  These instructions from the Word of God let us know that if we get sick, we should ask for the prayers of others so that we might be healed.  Notice that simple word “IF”.  “IF he have committed sins…”  This shows us that the sick one may not have sinned and resulted in this sickness.  IF he has sinned shows that not all sickness is a direct consequence of sin in our lives.  We are ALL subject to sickness and death simply because sin is in the world, and we all have sinned.

The Lord may allow for us to get sick for a particular reason.  Perhaps He is teaching us a lesson about suffering or about depending upon Him for all our cares.  Perhaps we have simply been exposed to some contagious condition, such as a cold or Covid.  I have found it a good thing that when I get sick, I ask the Lord if He is trying to teach me a lesson by this sickness.  If so, I pray He will show me the lesson He wants me to learn.  In 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, we find Paul was given a thorn in the flesh.  The Lord allowed this to keep Paul meek since He had given him many revelations.  After praying three times to be healed, Paul realized the purpose of his suffering.  Verses 9-10 says, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”  Paul learned his lesson and was thankful for the sickness he had to endure…it taught him a needed lesson.

Some sicknesses can come from our lifestyles.  If one smokes, he may develop lung cancer.  If one drinks to excess, he may develop liver problems.  Some of life’s sicknesses can be avoided by changing to a healthier lifestyle.

Realizing that sickness and death are the result of sin in our lives, the most important thing we can do is realize our sinfulness and received the free gift of eternal life the Lord offers us through faith in His dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.  We read in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  While you and I deserve to die because of our sins, the Lord has a gift for us…eternal life.  Wouldn’t you rather have this gift from God than to receive what you justly deserve?  It is so simple…put your faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross.  He died for you and was raised again the third day for you. If you are not saved, you can be saved right now.  Acts 16:31 is so simple and clear, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…”  (CC)  (588.4)
